We have quite a few talented photographers in our family. In fact, I just might be the only adult female in our family who can not boast this talent. I might be bitter about this if I didn't constantly reap the benefits of having a family full of photographers :)

These family pictures were taken by my sister-in-law, Emily. She's fantastic. She actually shot these pictures for us back in March but I am just now tackling the task of getting them onto my blog because I knew it would take some time for me to choose some favorites. Thanks, Emily :)

My husband now knows how to fix an iPhone with a cracked screen! That's right. Because if you refuse to keep a protective case or screen on the expensive phone that you've dropped & cracked on more than one occasion, that's a pretty good skill to have. He's quite proud.

It's been a couple of years since we've put on a 'friend party' for one our kids' birthdays. I realized some time ago that since a three-year-old very clearly understands the concept of a birthday party, there was no way we were going to get through the big day this year without friends, decorations, party favors, games, and a pinata...all party necessities. Also a necessity in this case? That all of the above incorporate lots of Little Mermaid.

August has been a great month for us. We've had some very exciting things happen. If I expected more out of my blogging self, I'd devote an individual post to each of these things. They certainly deserve that. It's a good thing I haven't set a precedence for being a prompt and proper blogger :) I can get away with this:

1. Jonah graduated! If there were any punctuation mark stronger than an exclamation point I'd have it at the end of that statement. We are very proud of him and we are so excited to have him around more now! Congrats, Jonah!

2. Nathan had a birthday. He's a big two-year-old now! He is a wild, wonderful little boy and we love him!

3. Baby Beckham is here! The Riries (my brother & his wife) had their little boy this month. He is beautiful and perfect. Not helping my baby fever.

I've come to terms with the fact that I tend to baby my kids. I can't help it. I have a hard time letting go of them as babies. I still cradle them in their towels when I get them out of the bathtub. Quite often I have to fight an urge to pluck one of their peacefully sleeping bodies out of bed to bring to bed with me. Every once in a while I don't fight it.

The younger of our two kids is very cooperative as a baby. He's not quite two years old and, although he makes a lot of noise, he doesn't talk much. The older of our kids, on the other hand, is becoming increasingly difficult to baby. How do you baby a child who reasons and questions and uses words like 'actually' and 'otherwise?' She says and does things every day that surprise and amuse us.

a couple of examples...

Dad: Olivia, do you love me?
Olivia: Not exactly.

Olivia (at 10pm): I need to go potty.
Mom: Then go potty.
Olivia: I need help.
Mom: You don't need help. Go potty and get back in bed.
Olivia (head cocked to the side): Mom, help me out here. I do need help.

To me she's still a little thing who's just too little to say the things she says and do the things she does.

I'm anticipating going through many more bittersweet transitions with my kids as they get older. I'm also anticipating I'll do a lot of crying. My kids should anticipate having a very embarrassing mother.

Our family spent Father's Day weekend in Corpus this year. We made the trip down there for my brother, John's, 30th birthday and we figured we'd stay and make a holiday of it.

During our visit to the aquarium I was reminded that my brother, John, has inherited one of my dad's funnest qualities (& one of my favorites), his love of candy. The snacks I had packed got really lame, really quick once my kids realized Uncle John had brought a few bags of candy...good candy...the kind that leaves sugar all over your hands after you've inhaled it...the kind that makes you do something like this to your cousin when you notice she's not licking the sugar off of her own hands...

We had a great visit with the Riries and a great time in Corpus. It was fun taking the kids to some of the places my siblings and I enjoyed as kids. We'll have another good reason to head down to Corpus once baby Beckham (or "Mennum") arrives!

Jonah completed his eighth and final year with the U.S. Army this month. Within the past eight years he has worked and trained with Civil Affairs units in San Antonio and Pasadena. He has served three tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Ours has been what I'm sure is a pretty typical military family's experience. It's been a long, challenging road but the Army has been pretty good to us. I'm grateful for what we've learned and experienced during our 'Army years,' but I'm also grateful that they've now come to an end. We kind of like having Jonah around.

I'm very grateful to all members of our military who serve and who have served our country and it makes me proud that Jonah is one of them.

brings us lots of joy. She's sweet, loving, smart and very feisty. She likes to sing and tell stories. She's patient with her brother and she teaches him to play the games she likes (furniture jumping, screaming contests, stroller races, etc.) She can put down large amounts of food and she loves candy. She loves books. She throws fits and cuddles like only a toddler can. We love her. And yesterday we celebrated her 3rd birthday!

Guess who goes into nursery this week! Guess who gets to sit in a class at church without having her clothing tugged on by tiny hands for the first time in almost three years! Guess who's going to miss chasing one wild little boy down as he rushes to find and pound on some piano keys during the middle of a lesson. Still guessing?...It's Nathan!...and Me!...and Not Me!

My sister's son, Peyton, passed away early this morning. I can't possibly adequately describe just how special he was or how much we're going to miss him. like when you leave your brand new camera in the backyard for two days...in the rain.

Let me start from the beginning. We bought a Canon Rebel a little over a month ago. I've been using it all over and around the house. Friday morning I made a quick look around for the camera and immediately remembered where I'd left it. I brought it inside and, as one would expect, the lenses were completely spotted with water. The camera turned on but would not focus. Another troubling sign- water dripping out the side of the lens. I'm somewhat of a realist so I told myself it was drenched and ruined and I resolved to move on and not let it ruin the day for myself and the kids. It wasn't until I had the chance to tell a friend what had happened that I found myself bawling. Funny how that happens.

Anyway, the one and only recommendation was to air it out. I removed the battery and the memory card and dried it out. I also wiped down different parts & switched it off and on several times which I understand you're not supposed to do. I'm impatient. And despite that I'm happy to report that the camera's actually working! It's a little quirky and still a little spotted and, although I still don't know much about this camera, I can tell you it's definitely taking pictures.

And this is the boy who is the reason I had the camera in the backyard.

I've got a new camera and I love it! Over the last couple of days I've been irritating my kids by taking loads of pictures of them. I'm starting to cool it since the only look I'm getting now from my 2-yr old is a glaring sideways glance when she sees the camera. I can't say it's not fierce but it's getting old.

My camera broke. I'm not too upset, though. Truth be told I've been waiting for my camera to brake for some time now...it's been half-broken for almost a year. I've been looking forward to getting a newer, nicer camera and now that the time has come I remember how much I hate making decisions... more so when they involve lots of money (going out, not coming in). It doesn't help that I know very little about cameras.

In the meantime, it's driving me nuts not being able to take pictures! Here's one that was taken during the last days of my half broken Kodak. I love this picture. Way to finish strong, Kodak.

Our Mima

Never did blog about Mima's visit! Mima, my grandmother, spent about a month here in Houston while my mom recovered from a recent surgery. My mom's side of the family is full of colorful women and I'd say Mima takes the cake. She's a lot of fun and we really enjoyed her visit. I still can't get over how neat it is to watch my own kids having fun with my grandparents the way I always did as a kid.

And this was a common sequence during Mima's visits to our house- Olivia leading her by the hand to her bedroom closet, shutting her in and walking away. You can't beat a great-grandmother who'll oblige that kind of behavior, right? And then to have her come out of your closet wearing your bloomers on her head like a Mexican wrestler? I wonder if my kids know how lucky they are :)

Ririe Reunion

Alright, we had a Ririe family reunion in California last month. It was nice having so much of our family together. We spent some time at my grandparents' home in Salinas. My siblings and I have some fun memories of that house from when we were kids so it was fun to now watch our kids enjoying their house as we always did. And, of course, they enjoyed our grandparents.

And we were reminded of why Californians pay so much to live in that state. The weather is gorgeous! After spending over 10 years in Texas, it felt a little Twilight Zone-ish having to wear a sweater in July.

We spent most of our time at Asilomar State Park but we also visited some sites around Monterey Bay. Get ready for a whole bunch of pictures...

Nathan's blessing happened a couple of weeks ago. It was a very special occasion for us. We love our little boy. Thanks for the pics, Sarah & Debbie.

And now, a couple of weeks later, the kids are finally getting over some ear infections they've had since then. It's nice to have them getting back to normal. And, as always, it's nice to know that the recent crankiness has had an actual cause and is not just an emerging personality trait.

Jonah starts school up again on Tuesday. I've LOVED having him home all day but I guess we've got to move along at some point. In other news for this upcoming week...we've got a Ricker and a Ririe baby coming! We're so excited!

Big News!..a few weeks late

It's been so long since my last post that I'm not sure where to begin! The big news is that Jonah's home! We picked him up from the airport about three weeks ago and we've been busy since then...good busy. It's wonderful to have him home and to have our family together again.

This past year was difficult and went by very slowly for our family but we had many ups along with our downs. On my end, the kids and I have been surrounded by family and friends who have been so caring and supportive.

I'm grateful for the great ward and Relief Society that we're part of. From yard work to meals to babysitting, our ward has been incredibly helpful. I've been overwhelmed by the love we've been shown and by the many acts of kindness we've received. And I've had fantastic visiting teachers!

I'm grateful for my family. It has meant so much to me that my kids have had loving grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins nearby while their dad was away. We love you guys.

Thanks to all of you whose thoughts and prayers were with Jonah and our family this past year. And thank you for the phone calls, encouraging words, and desserts that made this past year easier.

The Rickers, my sister's family, are staying with us for a bit while their son, Peyton, undergoes treatment for a brain tumor. Peyton recently finished six weeks of radiation and will continue chemotherapy until December. Last Friday he had his first follow up scan since being diagnosed back in July. When I walked outside yesterday this is what was staring at me. It was a little creepy. Birds don't usually just stare at you when you get that close to them and it took me a minute to realize why it was just sitting there. In the meantime, it was creepy.

What I like most about this situation is the contrast in reactions I got from my husband and my mother when I told them about it.

My mom (a science teacher): "You are so lucky! I can't believe you're so lucky! You should put a mirror above it so you can watch the eggs."

Jonah (not a member of PETA): "Get rid of it! Do you know how many diseases birds carry?"
Me: "Jonah, I think there are eggs in the nest."
Jonah: "Then wait for the bird to leave and stick the planter in the garage."
